BACK in the day, Wembley used to play host to inter-county GAA matches at this time of year and fascinating new footage has emerged of one such event.

In May 1966, just a couple of months before the World Cup final was staged on the very same turf, Cavan took on Sligo before a large crowd in the home of English football.

Up for grabs was the O’Gorman Cup, which Cavan duly won on a scoreline of 3-10 to 1-10, and it turns out the match was captured by an onlooker.

More Sport:

Charlie Gallagher lifted the cup for The Breffni Men and it appears as though a hurling match involving Wexford and Cork took place after the football.

Although there’s no commentary on video, some narration – perhaps by the owner of the footage, Jimmy Scanlan – is provided over this beautiful piece of film, which you can watch below.

I used to go to Wembley every year with my Dad, uncles and cousins. We'd meet at the Harrow Tavern and walk up to the stadium. We'd all have our colours on, all Kerry, it was always a great day.
