POLICE in Bedfordshire are appealing for information following the death of an Irishman in Luton at the weekend.

Kevin Kelly, 27, originally from Goresbridge in Co. Kilkenny, was involved in an “altercation” in Luton in the early hours of Sunday morning and died afterwards, Bedfordshire Police confirmed.

Police were informed of the incident at 5.15am on Sunday and Mr Kelly was taken to hospital, where he died.

A cause of death has not been established.

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and released on bail pending further police enquiries.

Mr Kelly was living in Luton and working as a plasterer, listed as the company director of KK Plastering and Drylining.

He attended Borris Vocational School in Co. Carlow and had been living in Britain after a period of living in Australia.

Bedfordshire Police have set up a special investigation under the name of Operation Dubnium to establish the circumstances surrounding Mr Kelly’s death.

Detective chief inspector Richard Wall of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit has appealed for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

“There may have been several people in the area making their way home at the end of a night out and from CCTV we believe there may be witnesses to the incident,” he said.

“I’m appealing for anyone who saw the altercation, or who witnessed anything of note in the area around this time, to get in touch to help us piece together what happened.”

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page has been set up online to raise money for Mr Kelly’s family to assist with repatriation and funeral costs.

The page, set up by his cousin Pierce Kelly, has seen £3,640 of a £10,000 target raised since it went live yesterday.

Anyone with information can contact Bedfordshire Police on 01707 355 666 or 101 quoting Op Dubnium
