Irish adventurer Ian McKeever dies on Mount Kilimanjaro

Irish mountaineer and adventurer Ian McKeever has died following a lightning strike on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

The 42-year-old Wicklow man was taking a group of climbers, many of whom were Irish, up the mountain when they got caught up in a storm yesterday.

McKeever’s family confirmed his death late last night.

Writing on the Facebook page ‘Ian McKeever’s Kilimanjaro Achievers 2012’, the family wrote

It is with deep regret, that we, Ian’s family, fiancee Anna and friends, advise of his sudden death on Kilimanjaro, today, doing what he loved best

McKeever was a former broadcaster with AA Roadwatch and had achieved several world records during his years as an adventurer, including the Seven Summits Challenge back in 2007.
