Ireland is now one of the best places in Europe to pick up a Christmas bargain, according to research.
For the first time in five years Dublin has made the top 10 of the cheapest European destinations.
Beating Madrid, Amsterdam, Rome and Paris into 10th place, many essential items are cheaper in the Irish capital than in the shops of many European neighbours. But London is still a better bet for bargain-hunters, according to the new survey.
According to the PriceRunner.co.uk International Price Comparison, the price of goods in Dublin have never been such good value.
Prices from 32 countries around the world were compared, revealing India, Thailand and Poland as the cheapest places to shop, while Norway, Brazil and Sweden are the most expensive.
Dublin’s falling prices have seen the Irish capital jump four places from last year’s ranking of 14th cheapest in Europe or 11th most expensive in the world.
But the study suggests we still have some way to go, if we are to lure bargain-hunters from abroad.
Dublin is still more expensive than London, in sixth place, and lags behind other European neighbours, including Warsaw, Prague, Budapest, Vilnius, Brussels, Berlin, Lisbon and Athens.
And gadgets and designer goods are still significantly more expensive here than elsewhere.
Alison Guise of PriceRunner.co.uk said: “Dublin is often considered a city with a very high cost of living. However, in PriceRunner’s international price comparison study for 2011, Dublin was listed in the top ten cheapest European cities.
“The prices for basic food and entertainment were comparable to London. In 2010, Dublin was listed as the 11th most expensive city in the world, so it’s great to see that certain prices in Dublin are dropping, particularly in the run-up to Christmas when many consumers are looking around for gifts and are often out with friends and family.”
However, she added: “There is unfortunately a flip side, as Ireland is still not the best place for gadgets of designer goods.”
