THE funeral of acclaimed poet and Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney, who died on Friday at the age 74, is to take place this morning.

Mr Heaney’s remains were removed last night to the Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook, where the funeral mass will take place at 11.30am.

The funeral will be broadcast across live the world on TV and radio by RTÉ.

President Michael D Higgins is among those expected to pay his respects to Mr Heaney’s widow Marie and their children Christopher, Michael and Catherine Ann.

In the wake of the poet’s death, tributes from across the world have poured in with many musical acts at Ireland’s Electric Picnic festival paying tribute to the poet over the weekend.

Books of condolences have also been opened at the Mansion House in Dublin, City Hall in Belfast and the Guildhall in Derry.

Following today’s mass, Mr Heaney’s remains will be buried at Bellaghy Cemetery in Co Derry.
