AN IRISH airport has been voted as one of the world’s most scenic airport approaches.

Donegal Airport was ranked in the top 10 in a global poll of travel experts and fans, out of 115 different airports around the world.

Thousands of people voted on a shortlist that was chosen by a panel of experts – with Malta International Airport topping the list.

The survey – conducted by private jet booking service PrivateFly – ranked seventh-placed Donegal Airport ahead of London City, Los Angeles LAX and St Maarten in the Caribbean.

Voters said of Donegal Airport: “You arrive in the Emerald Isle adjacent to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world; Carrickfinn with a backdrop of the majestic Mount Errigal on one side and an array of craggy islands on the other. Though clear turquoise blue sea is just a bonus on a sunny day.”

The airport was opened in 1986, having replaced the green runway with tarmac, with a new terminal built in the 1990s.

PrivateFly’s 10 Best Scenic Airport Landings:

1. Malta International Airport, Malta

2. Nice Cote D’Azur Airport, France

3. Queenstown Airport, New Zealand

4. Barra Airport, Scotland, UK
