THIEVES have made off with signed jerseys of League of Ireland champions Dundalk FC which were due to be auctioned for charity.

The club’s Oriel Park stadium was the subject of a burglary a matter of weeks before the new SSE Airtricity League campaign begins, with Gardai investigating a break-in.

According to local radio station LMFM, the break-in happened early on Tuesday morning, with around 25 jerseys and a laptop among the stolen goods.

A club spokesperson told The42.ie that the club’s boardroom was targeted, with windows and doors smashed through.

“It’s extremely disappointing,” he said. “We have worked hard in the local area to make the club the bedrock of the community and it’s disappointing people choose to do this.”

Dundalk will bid to become the first team since Shamrock Rovers in 1986-87 to win the league title three years in a row when they kick off their campaign away to Bray Wanderers on March 5.
